Residential houses and Grande Miniera of Serbariu

Though not formally involved in the urban planning of Carbonia, Eugenio Montuori played a particularly important role in designing the area of the residential houses for managers and office workers, amongst which can be found some prestigious houses.

The house of the mine manager is a perfect example of a rationalist style villa with some Mediterranean elements. The regular edifice is characterised by its loggia and metaphysical arches. Elevated by a podium reached by a staircase, the house has a balcony on the first floor as well as a roof balcony. The interior spaces are large and luxurious with purposefully designed furnishings. The external surfaces are covered with Terranova plaster; the windows and the upper edge of the building are framed by thin marble slabs, while the pedestal in trachyte is in line with all other buildings in town. The villa recalls themes of naval architecture such as metal railings and wooden pergolas, as well as a great attention to the play of light and shadow. Immersed in a large park, this villa is undoubtedly a unique piece of architecture. It was the famous landscape architect Pietro Porcinai who designed this park, like all the park areas in Carbonia.

In the area of the Grande Miniera di Serbariu, the former administration building can be found, a building with two floors. The upper floor housed the Director’s office and those of the office workers, as well as the rooms where the mine workers received their payroll. The basement, which is connected to the upper floor by a staircase, housed a safe vault where the money for wages and ordinary expenses of the mine were kept.
