Landscape in a Box: paesaggi, memorie, comunità - il 1944

"Landscape in a Box: paesaggi, memorie, comunità - il 1944" is a project promoted by the ATRIUM association to strengthen critical awareness and historical memory through the exploration of sites and architectures left by fascism. In this edition, the initiative involved high school students in an educational and creative journey focused on places and events that took place in the cities of Forlì and Cesena in 1944. The two themes were the women's strike in Forlì in March 1944, which saved the lives of ten young men avoiding conscription, and, coinciding with the reopening of Cesena's recently restored air-raid shelter, the passage of the front line during the Second World War.

The students, guided by the Deina Association, a long-standing ATRIUM partner in peer education activities, created two "landscapes in a box" - educational kits that narrate the historical sites and events through objects, maps, documents, and videos. These kits have been digitized and are available online on this website, enriching ATRIUM's digital museum of "landscapes in a box" and ensuring broad and innovative dissemination of historical memory.

The project also benefitted from the collaboration of two theater companies: Malocchi e Profumi from Forlì and Alchemico 3 from Cesena, which helped make the students' work engaging and impactful through theatrical readings, sound installations, and support for creative activities.

The final events, where students presented their work accompanied by theatrical readings, took place on:

  • 19 December, 2024, in Cesena, with a visit to the air-raid shelter and a concluding meeting at Palazzo del Ridotto;
  • 21 December, 2024, in Forlì, in the Aula Magna of the Carlo Matteucci Technical Economic Institute.

"Landscape in a Box" is an innovative example of memory education, combining the use of contemporary artistic languages and digital tools to make the past accessible and meaningful for younger generations.
