Critical History Tours

Walkig tours as a tool for reflecting in contested history

Throughout Europe, historical sites linked to contested memories are at the center of political polarization and ideological conflicts. Many of these places hold deep emotional significance for different social and cultural groups, leading to long-standing disagreements and disputes. Tour guides and educational organizations working in these contexts often struggle to interpret controversial histories without adequate training or support.

This project seeks to address these challenges by developing critical history walking tours as a medium for engagement with contested histories, situated at the crossroads of public history, heritage interpretation, and tourism. The initiative aims to create innovative methodologies for presenting difficult histories, equipping guides and educators with the tools to navigate sensitive topics in an inclusive and critical way.

By fostering dialogue and critical reflection on Europe’s historical heritage, the project promotes cross-sectoral cooperation and encourages the development of diverse and inclusive narratives.
