Kalymnos, as Rhodes, was under the supervision of Mario Lagο until 1936, who was then replaced by Marshal Cesare Maria De Vecchi. In 1937 he imposed new school regulations, and one year later a racist law, aiming at the purity of the Italian race. Catechism was carried out in churches or secretly in homes, by Greek Orthodox priests or theologians, who distributed church and religious books to the children. The children secretly transported the books to avoid detection by the Italian authorities. The island has few buildings of the totalitarian period compared with Rhodes.
